If you want to download your contacts from LinkedIn, you'll have to wait a long time!: It could take the whole weekend – LinkedIn users have to wait up to three days if they want a list of their contacts from the service.

Until recently, the social networking site provided a way for users to directly export their contacts. It was a useful feature for people who wanted to manage their contacts elsewhere.

Under a change made Thursday, users now have to request a download of their account data. On a page describing the new process, LinkedIn informs users that they will receive an email within 72 hours with a link to download the file when it is ready.

A link with instructions for the process appears in a very small spot on Linked In's Export Settings page. The change was previously reported by VentureBeat.

This change could be aimed at keeping people more active on LinkedIn, but it has already annoyed some users.

"Bad news of the day," tweeted Gary Kayye, who teaches a course on new media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

However, the data file sent to users includes a variety of content. In addition to first-degree connections, it includes shared posts, connection history, uploaded photos , and the criteria that LinkedIn uses to show ads to the user

Linked In did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
