The Prosecution warns about illegal betting websites

Cybercrime Prosecution

The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate informs citizens and draws attention to avoiding betting on social media profiles and websites that promise high odds, guaranteed results and money back in the event of a prediction failure, for various sporting events and especially for football matches.

In particular, the administrators of the investigated profiles/websites claim to possess confidential information on specific results, mainly of football matches, and urge interested internet users to bet various amounts of money, even amounting to thousands of euros, falsely promising higher than legal betting odds or a refund in case of failure of the prediction. They then send users electronic payment codes either from prepaid cards or transactions through money transfer companies.

Unsuspecting internet users, after being convinced and sending the agreed upon amounts of money, never receive the money won from correct predictions or the refund of the amounts they paid, in the event of incorrect prediction results.

The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate recommends that citizens not respond to such solicitations or advertisements, to immediately report such profiles, through the relevant procedure on the respective social networking site, and not to send any amount of money for such a purpose, as this is a fraudulent process.

Furthermore, according to Greek law, illegal betting is a criminal offense for every participant.
