How forgotten BlackBerry phones suddenly became valuable again after the Sony Pictures hack
When Sony Pictures ' computer network was attacked by hackers on Thanksgiving Day in the US, employees at the film company were forced to use older technologies in order to at least cope with their absolutely necessary daily obligations.
According to reports in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, the first information about the attack was passed from one person to another over the phone. Old check-issuing machines were brought out of storage, since electronic transactions were not possible, and old BlackBerrys suddenly became valuable again.
Mobile phones, which in the previous decade were an extension of the hand of millions of professionals, entrepreneurs and business executives, due to the provision of access to email services – before the sweeping invasion of smartphones and affordable data usage from mobile networks – provided the solution. Thus, many Sony Pictures employees were able to send and receive emails via BlackBerry servers.
The operation of Sony Pictures' computer network has not yet been fully restored.
