Nest Thermostat integrates Google Now & Google voice commands

Nest Thermostat

Google bought Nest for $3.2 billion almost a year ago and their integration is now underway.

Details of the implementation can be found at workswithnest.google.com, where users can choose between two features. The first new trick is quite simple and allows them to control the temperature with their voice, simply saying “OK Google, change the temperature to 70 degrees” and the Nest will do it.

The second is a bit more advanced. Nest has always been able to detect when a user is away, but now Google Now detects when the user is returning home. This allows the user to turn on the HVACso that the house is at a comfortable temperature when they arrive. Nest can use its data to estimate how long it takes for an HVAC to heat or cool a house, and Google Now can calculate the user's arrival time, so that the two systems can take all of that data into account and plan accordingly.

Nest integration starts today in the Google app for Android and iOS . Users will also need to have a Nest Google Now card , but if the updates don't start working right away after selecting them, users should wait a day or two as Google may be rolling out the program in stages.
