A series of important satellite systems built for government use contain significant vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit to interfere with military operations and flight communications, according to research.
As reported in a Guardian article, security research firm IOActive says it has identified significant vulnerabilities in software and satellite facilities from British companies Cobham and Inmarsat. Vulnerable equipment from Harris Corporation, Hughes, Iridium, Thuraya and Japan Radio Company was also reportedly found.
According to the IOActive report, there are some systems that are extremely easy to hack – which are used to keep aircraft, ships, and military personnel safe.
Malicious hackers could install software to track military forces or disable systems entirely. It could also disrupt distress signals and satellite communications used by ships and aircraft.
As noted in the article, the only company that confirmed that it was working on fixing the problems/vulnerabilities was Iridium.
