Deutsche Welle: Historic decision on personal data

Defenders of individual freedoms had every reason to celebrate after yesterday's decision by the European Court of Justice, writes Deutsche Welle.

The judges in Luxembourg, with a clear decision, overturned a European directive from 2006, which required member states to store, for at least six months, data such as who talked to whom, for how long, or how many electronic messages were exchanged.

The European judges, in a historic decision, as the German press calls it today, ruled that the “European legislator exceeded the limits when issuing the directive» as literally stated in the reasoning of its decision.

The related discussion in Germany has been causing tensions in the public dialogue for years. The defenders of individual rights speak of a threatened comprehensive surveillance of citizens while the opponents argue that the constantly increasing internet crime requires greater interventions.

The decision is expected to spark renewed debate in EU member states and in the German government, which has not yet passed a relevant law.
