The findings of the groundbreaking global research on safe navigation and social networking in the Greek Army are impressive.
The research was presented on Tuesday morning at the War Museum in Athens, in the presence of the country's military leadership, while the event was coordinated by the Director of Cybercrime Prosecution, Manolis Sfakianakis.
The keynote speakers of the presentation were the person responsible for planning and coordinating the research, Dr. Costas Siomos, as well as psychiatrist Georgios Floros.
According to the data presented, 7% of the participants, belonging to the Army, Air Force and Navy, showed tendencies of internet addiction.
At the same time, a strong correlation was identified between hours of Internet use outside of work, while some of the participants presented a series of symptoms such as compulsive behavior, anxiety, and general psychopathology.
It is noteworthy that symptoms of psychopathology include visiting pages with pornographic material, online gambling, online games, and random browsing without a specific purpose.
According to what Dr. Siomos described, over-involvement with online gambling applications results in financial losses that bring despair to the patient and make him vulnerable to attempts at exploitation, while the result of online victimization with the lure of online sex may be similar.
At the same time, constant and incorrect engagement with the internet and social networks can lead to the leakage of sensitive information about upcoming military actions by the personnel involved on social networking sites.
Besides, Mr. Manolis Sfakianakis referred to dozens of incidents where conscripts communicated information regarding the actions of the Armed Forces, via Facebook and other social networks.
This is not surprising, as only a small percentage of the military reports relevant training in the use of the internet through specialized training seminars.
On the contrary, a significant percentage has received malicious behavior through social networks.
It should be noted that the event was honored with their presence by the President of the OTE-COSMOTE group, Mr. Michalis Tsamaz, and the Senior Director of Corporate Relations of Wind, Mr. George Tsaprounis.
