Windows 11's dark mode becomes more consistent in File Explorer

Microsoft is finally addressing complaints about dark mode in Windows 11. The company began testing improvements to Windows 11's dark mode in preview builds of the operating system back in August. Now it's making those changes official, with improvements to the consistency of dark mode across File Explorer, for actions like copying, moving, or deleting files and folders.

If you try to copy a large file in Windows 11, you’ll see a dialog box in light mode, even if you have dark mode enabled. This is changing, along with the move and delete dialog boxes and a few other parts of Windows 11. Microsoft says it’s also working on a more “consistent dark mode experience” in progress bars and graph views, as well as confirmation and error dialog boxes, and prompts for skipping, overriding, and selecting files.

Microsoft first introduced the dark mode option in Windows 10 in 2016, and it took almost a decade to focus on achieving greater consistency. There are still many areas that Microsoft needs to improve, including theRun, the file properties UI, the Control Panel, and the Folder Options UI in File Explorer.

Dark mode has become a popular choice for many users, as it offers a more pleasant user experience, especially in low-light environments. Consistency in dark mode is important to ensure that users do not experience sudden changes in brightness that can be annoying or even harmful to the eyes.

Microsoft seems to recognize the importance of this consistency and is working to ensure that dark mode is fully integrated throughout the operating system. This includes not only the core features of File Explorer but also other apps and features that users use every day.
