Critical Chrome Vulnerability – Use After Free: Fix Immediately!

Chrome Vulnerability: Google has released an urgent security update for Chrome to address a critical use-after-free vulnerability (CVE-2025-9478) in the ANGLE graphics library . The vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on compromised systems.

Chrome vulnerability - Use After Free

The vulnerability affects Chrome versions prior to 139.0.7258.154/.155 on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. The issue was discovered on August 11, 2025, by Google's vulnerability research team, Big Sleep, which uses artificial intelligence tools. It has been rated critical and has received the highest CVSS severity rating.

The Chrome Stable Channel was released on August 26, 2025 and addresses this critical issue through automatic updates available globally.

Chrome Vulnerability: Technical Details

The vulnerability is in Chrome's ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) library, which translates OpenGL ES API calls to hardware-specific graphics APIs, including Direct3D, Vulkan, and native OpenGL. Use-after-free errors, such as this vulnerability, occur when a program continues to use a memory pointer after the memory has been freed, creating opportunities for heap manipulation and memory corruption attacks.

In this case, the issue in the ANGLE library's memory management routines could be exploited via malicious web that causes improper memory deallocation sequences. Successful exploitation would allow attackers to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the Chrome renderer process, potentially leading to sandbox escape and a complete system compromise.

The vulnerability is particularly concerning due to the widespread use of ANGLE in web applications that use WebGL rendering, HTML5 Canvas operations, and GPU-accelerated graphics processing.

Chrome Vulnerability: Ways to Protect Yourself

Organizations should prioritize immediate deployment of Chrome version 139.0.7258.154 or later to mitigate exploit risks.

The update includes comprehensive patches for the ANGLE library's memory management functions and enhanced heap protection mechanisms to prevent similar use-after-free vulnerabilities. Security teams should implement application allowlisting, network segmentation , and endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions to detect potential exploitation attempts.

Additionally, organizations should consider deploying Content Security Policy (CSP) headers and isolation technologies browser to reduce the attack surface for web-based exploits targeting this class of vulnerabilities.

Given the critical nature of this issue, security professionals should monitor for unusual network traffic patterns, unexpected process spawning , and strange memory allocation behaviors that may indicate active exploitation attempts against out-of-date Chrome installations.

This particular Chrome vulnerability is a prime example of how quickly a technical flaw can escalate into a critical cybersecurity issue. The fact that it was discovered at such a low level—in the ANGLE library—shows just how complex the software chain that underpins everyday internet use is. A seemingly “innocent” bug in memory management can be a vehicle for a full-scale system compromise, especially when we’re talking about a browser with such massive penetration as Chrome.

It is also worth noting the timing: the vulnerability was discovered using artificial intelligence tools by Google itself, which highlights the dual nature of AI. On the one hand, it acts as an ally in the early detection of errors that may have gone unnoticed. On the other hand, we cannot ignore that the same mechanisms can also be exploited by cybercriminals to identify security gaps before companies have time to fix them.

Ultimately, the incident highlights that protecting against use-after-free bugs is a race to the finish between researchers and attackers. Google won this battle with a quick patch release, but the real challenge is to mobilize users and organizations to close the window of opportunity left by such critical vulnerabilities.
