AYANEO has long established itself in the niche of dedicated portable gaming devices, and its latest release is yet another exciting proposition. It’s a hybrid device – part Nintendo DS, part gaming laptop – and is officially available for pre-order starting today. The AYANEO Flip 1S is a clamshell-style portable device that comes in two versions: one with two screens and one with a built-in keyboard. Both versions feature full gaming controls and run Windows with AYANEO’s proprietary software for an optimized experience.

The main display on both versions is a stunning 7-inch OLED with a 144Hz refresh rate. The second, smaller display on the dual-screen model is a 4.5-inch LCD with a 3:2 aspect ratio – likely the same one used on the AYANEO Pocket ACE released earlier this year. On the keyboard version, the second display is replaced by a small RGB-lit keyboard.

Both versions feature a full set of controls, including mid-sized TMR-style sticks. This newer technology offers all the benefits of Hall effect sticks, with even greater precision and resolution. There's also a small optical finger mouse, though it seems less comfortable to use compared to the Steam Deck's trackpads.

There are also two processor options: the cheaper models feature the Ryzen 7 8840U, while the more expensive ones are equipped with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.The former is offered with 16 or 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM, while the latter comes with 32 or 64GB of RAM. All models are available with 1TB or 2TB of storage, expandable via a microSD.

These processors draw significantly more power than other popular portable gaming devices, such as the ROG Ally or Steam Deck, and the 45Wh battery is unlikely to provide more than a few hours of gameplay at high settings. 65W PD charging is supported, but the device seems more suited to couch gaming than truly portable use on the go.

However, the dual-screen design is great not only for PC gaming, but also for Nintendo DS, 3DS, and Wii U emulation. The Wii U emulation in particular works much better on Windows than on Android, which offers a significantly superior experience to, for example, a Retroid Pocket 5 with the added second screen.

The AYANEO Flip 1S DS and KB are now available for pre-order, with prices starting at $779 during the crowdfunding campaign. The top-of-the-line model costs $1559 and comes in Retro Power (gray) and Starry Yellow (yellow) colors. The devices are expected to begin shipping in August.
