The creators of the DeepSeek app claim that their model “holds the top spot among open-source models and competes with the most advanced closed-source models worldwide.” According to app analytics firm Sensor Tower, the rapid success of the Chinese app has caused unrest in Silicon Valley, as US dominance in the field of artificial intelligence. In addition, it seems that the obstacles that the US is putting on China, with export bans on chips and other equipment, are not having the desired effect.

AI models like DeepSeek-V3 and ChatGPT rely on high-performance chips for training. Despite U.S. bans on chip exports, DeepSeek researchers revealed that their model was trained using Nvidia’s H800, which reportedly cost under $6 million. The credibility of these claims is disputed, but the Chinese company has still managed to train its model effectively. This situation raises concerns about the effectiveness of export restrictions aimed at limiting the progress of artificial intelligence in China.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 and is based in Hangzhou. Many new Chinese companies have created AI models in recent times. However, DeepSeek's is the first Chinese AI model to gain widespread recognition in the US (as evidenced by its App Store).
