Spotify to host 250,000 video podcasts by 2024

This is supported by the latest insights from the popular app. Spotify launched video podcasts for a select number of shows in 2020 and has since expanded the format to creators in almost every market.

Clearly, video podcasts have gained popularity, with creators around the world adopting the format to boost their popularity. Over half of Spotify's top 20 podcasts now feature videos, including major shows like The Joe Rogan Experience.

Globally, average daily video podcast streams on Spotify have grown by more than 39% year-over-year. In the US, nearly two-thirds of podcast listeners prefer shows with video, Spotify says.

Globally, hours of video consumption on Spotify have grown faster than hours of audio-only consumption year-over-year, with higher retention rates for video podcasts. Spotify has shared new statistics highlighting the growing popularity of video podcasts on the platform:

  • There are now over 250,000 video podcasts on Spotify, up from 100,000 in 2023.
  • More than 170 million users have watched a video podcast on Spotify.
  • Over 70% of users who watch video podcasts do so in the foreground.
  • Nearly one in three monthly active podcast users (MAUs) in the US engage with video, while nearly one in four globally engage with video. Globally, the number of podcast video MAUs has grown 40% year-over-year.
  • The number of creators actively posting videos each month has increased by nearly 70% year over year.
  • The largest markets for creators publishing videos are the US, Brazil, and Mexico.
  • In Brazil and the Philippines, about 20% of all monthly active podcasters publish videos, a percentage that has nearly doubled since last year.
  • In Chile and Brazil, video is increasing its share of total podcast consumption hours on Spotify. In Chile, video hours make up a quarter of total podcast consumption hours and in Brazil, over 15%.
