In recent years, companies have been pushing the boundaries of refresh rates in gaming monitors, surpassing the 500 Hz mark. Now, they're aiming for even higher frequencies. Interestingly, this progress is no longer limited to 1080p or 1440p resolution panels. Chinese company TCL CSOT recently unveiled the world's first 4K panel with 1000 Hz, marking a major advancement in monitor technology for gaming enthusiasts.

Currently, the fastest monitors on the market feature a refresh rate of 540 Hz using TN panels. These monitors often feature lower resolutions due to the limitations of the display technology and available bandwidth. However, advancements such as the DisplayPort 2.1 standard, particularly with the UHBR20 feature, have the potential to deliver refresh rates of up to 884 Hz at 1080p without the need for display stream compression (DSC). With the introduction of DSC 3.0 compression technology, the bandwidth requirement to achieve a refresh rate of 540 Hz at 1080p is reduced to just 15.5 Gbit/s, well below the available bandwidth of 77.3 Gbit/s (UHBR20).

Blur Busters, who visited the TCL booth and took photos, explained what is required to support such high frame rates. While a more powerful GPU may seem like the obvious solution, with frame rates already reaching into the hundreds, frame generation or interleaving can be considered a viable option.

The goal is to achieve a photorealistic visual experience through modern game engines and frame generation technology that operates at a 10:1 ratio. The ultimate goal is to ensure a lag-free and freeze-free experience, similar to the goals set for video encoding technologies. Very close cooperation between display panel manufacturers, game developers and GPU manufacturers is required. It seems that TCL CSOT has already taken the first step.
