The court, in the German-speaking region of Marche in central Switzerland, serves a population of around 45,000 people.

The nature of the incident has not been disclosed, although the limited description on the court's website suggests it was likely a ransomware.

“The entire IT system had to be taken down to protect data. At this time, it is unclear when the system will be available again, but it could take several days,” the website states.

The court's phone lines are currently down, however scheduled court hearings are expected to take place as scheduled.

The cyberattack comes after another ransomware attack on the municipal administration of Zollikofen, a suburb of Bern, in November.

According to Swiss news outlet Inside IT, the attackers encrypted data during the incident, and authorities shut down and disconnected their networks as a precautionary measure. Earlier this year, the Swiss government warned citizens that hackers had attacked an IT company, resulting in the leak of official data.

While many financially motivated ransomware groups avoid attacking victims perceived to be within Russia, the selection of victims from abroad is often opportunistic.

Switzerland, which has adopted a neutral foreign policy for the past 200 years regarding armed conflicts, chose to implement European Union sanctions against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

The judicial system and the administration of justice can have serious implications for the functioning of the system. One of the main risks is the disruption of access to important data and records, which can violate the integrity of information and make it difficult to administer justice. This can lead to delays or even cancellation of judicial proceedings, with serious consequences for justice and public trust.

Furthermore, a cyberattack can lead to the leakage of sensitive information, such as personal data and confidential documents. This can jeopardize the privacy and security of individuals involved in legal proceedings, and cause serious consequences for those involved.

Furthermore, cyberattacks can cause disruption and loss of confidence in the judicial system. Citizens and stakeholders may question the reliability of decisions and the correctness of judicial procedures, thereby undermining the principle of justice and trust in the system.

Finally, a cyberattack can have financial consequences for the justice system. Repairing the damage and strengthening security can require significant resources and time, while loss of trust can lead to a reduction in resources allocated to the justice system.
