The Toronto Public Library (TPL) was the victim of a cyberattack on Saturday, October 28, resulting in many of its online services now being offline.
TPL is Canada's largest system , giving people access to 12 million books through 100 branches (libraries) across Toronto.
The library's main website is offline, so the Toronto Public Library made an announcement on a website created after the incident. It mentions the cyberattack and the services that were affected:
- Your Account feature
- 'tpl:map' passes
- Digital collections
- Public computers
- Printing services at library branches
However, the library branches remain open and operating according to the published schedule . Therefore, people can continue to borrow and return books. WiFi access also remains available and telephone lines are working.

Online services hosted anywhere other than tpl.ca, such as Kanopy, Digital Archive, Digital Archive Ontario, TPL Kids, and “Ready for Reading,” remain available.
The Toronto Public Library did not provide details about the nature of the cyberattack, but said there is currently no evidence that any customer or staff data was compromised.
The Library says it has taken steps to respond immediately to the incident and to prevent similar attacks in the future. It also warns that full restoration will take some time, so it asks for the public's understanding and patience.
