Apple: Big change to iMessage next year

Apple has announced its plans to implement the messaging standard (RCS) in iOS.

This will give Android users the ability to enjoy featureslike message delivery receipts and media sharing. This change is expected to be implemented next year and will work with the RCS Universal Profile, offering a better interoperability experience compared to SMS or MMS, while iMessage will remain the preferred option for Apple users.

Motivation from Europe

Apple's decision to adopt the RCS messaging standard in iMessage came after pressure from regulators and competitors to make it work more effectively across operating systems. EU digital market rules require interoperability between platforms. Google ,which already supports RCS, has expressed support for Apple's decision, and earlier this year submitted a request to the European Commission for iMessage to be a mainstream product. The two companies are working together to further develop RCS and improve messaging security.

Apple's resistance

Apple, after years of resistance, has decided to adopt the RCS messaging standard in iMessage and integrate a common USB-C charging system into the iPhone 15. This choice was made in part due to pressure from EU legislation, which requires USB-C charging on all devices by 2024. In addition, Apple is expected to work with the GSM Association to increase the security of RCS and integrate it into iMessage. Analysts predict that these changes will benefit all users, improving interoperability between iOS and Android.

Bubbles

Apple's decision to adopt the RCS messaging standard does not mean that the features of the "green" bubbles (users ) and "blue" bubbles (Apple users) will disappear. Maintaining these colors remains a marketing strategy for Apple that strengthens the company's recognition. Analysts predict that the blue bubble will remain a symbol of Apple's identity, while supporting RCS will improve the communication experience between iPhone and Android users, while maintaining the brand's aesthetic.
