The news of the week is that, according to Bloomberg reports, Apple has taken an imminent pause in development of new features for iOS 18 in order to focus on bug fixes. Despite this week-long pause, the company maintains its big ambitions for the next iPhone software update next year.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is internally describing iOS 18 as “ambitious and exciting.” The goal is to include “significant new features and designs” along with significant improvements to performance and security.

While there are no specific details about the new features, it is reported that iOS 18 will come "after several years of smaller and more monotonous updates" for iPhone and iPad users.
The simplest argument that can be made is that the last major update for the iPhone was iOS 14 in 2020, which added support for widgets on the home screen.
Previously, Bloomberg reported that Apple has a wide range of new artificial intelligence features in development for iOS 18.

Presumably, pausing development for a week will not significantly affect the final release of the software, although there is a possibility that there will be less time to resolve any final detailed issues at the end of the development process.
It's worth noting that we're still seven months away from the iOS 18 launch at WWDC 2024, and a lot can change by then.
