Rusty Rabbit: The post-apocalyptic Metroidvania game

Rusty Rabbit is a post-apocalyptic Metroidvania game, where rabbits have conquered the earth.

While most of us spent many days of the 2020 pandemic lockdown binge-watching Netflix and doing other things, famed anime screenwriter Gen Urobochi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass) decided to create his own video game. This rough demo features a rabbit in a mechanical suit wading through piles of trash in a post-apocalyptic world. The game, called Rusty Rabbit, was announced this week at the Tokyo Game Show by developer Nitro Plus. It's a 2.5D Metroidvania game that promises to impress players. "At first, it was just a hobby," Urobochi said. "This was a job I loved, and I basically wanted to get into Unity."

As the days of lockdown turned into weeks and months, Urobochi continued to dedicate himself to the demo of the game based on a rabbit.

“The more I focused on my screen, the more my imagination expanded,” Urobochi said. “I made a demo and presented it to NetEase, the publishing company, and they suggested that we recreate this idea in Unreal Engine and turn it into a product that could be sold.”.

“And I said, let’s do it. And so it happened.”

Thus was born Rusty Rabbit, a Metroidvania game with ruthless elements. The story takes place thousands of years after humanity abandoned Earth and rabbits conquered it. The main character, Stamp, with long ears, spends his days piloting his “Junkster” suit through the gigantic ruins of a massive space elevator, searching for valuable fossils. One day, he accidentally discovers information about his missing daughter in an abandoned computer called “D-Tam”. He decides to embark on a quest for more information, exploring the computers buried throughout Rusty Rabbit’s labyrinth. During his journey, he fights enemies, hunts for treasure, and returns to his base to upgrade his suit.

According to Urobochi, Rusty Rabbit's story and exploration will be structured in a similar way to other Metroidvania-style games. The game's 2.5D world will expand in all directions as Stamp gains new abilities and tools to progress. Additionally, Rusty Rabbit will feature a structure that includes randomly generated areas.

"We ended up having two types of dungeons," Urobochi said. "We made story dungeons, which are more linear and have RPG, and then we also threw in some random ones."

Whether these additional dungeons simply serve as side quests or offer additional ways to boost Stamp's stats outside of the main story remains to be seen. In fact, aside from the original trailer and a few screenshots, there aren't many other details available about Rusty Rabbit at the moment. However, the idea of an adorable rabbit in a fancy mechanical suit traversing a post-apocalyptic world in search of his lost daughter has piqued interest. Urobochi's lineage reveals that Rusty Rabbit's story is much more complicated than it first appears.
