Facebook Messenger: Will not be available on Apple Watch after May 31

Meta has informed Facebook Messenger users that the Apple Watch version will not be available after May 31. While you will continue to receive message notifications , you will not be able to reply from your Apple Watch . There was no explanation from Meta for this decision.

It is worth noting that not all users of the app have received the notification of the app's withdrawal from the Apple Watch, but when asked for clarification by Reviewgeek, a Meta spokesperson stated the following:

“People can still receive Facebook Messenger notifications on their Apple Watch, but starting in late May, they will no longer be able to reply from their watch. They can continue to use Messenger on iPhone, desktop, and web“.

Meta, which was then known as Facebook, introduced Messenger for the Apple Watch in 2015. The app didn't support text, but users could send voice replies, stickers, and other similar smartwatch-friendly responses.

As we said above, Meta did not explain why it decided to remove Facebook Messenger from the Apple Watch. However, there are a few factors that may have played a role. At first, the limited interaction may not be that appealing. Many users may prefer to use their iPhone to communicate effectively (with text messages, etc.) with friends . Also, Meta is laying off about 10,000 employees and trying to reduce costs. So, it may withdraw some projects and Messenger for Apple Watch may be one of them as it is definitely not a top priority.

Many companies have abandoned their Apple Watch apps over the past few years. Meta may be pulling Facebook Messenger from the Apple Watch now, but in 2018, it pulled the Instagram, and other companies like Slack, Twitter , and Uber have also moved away from the platform. In many cases, developers left due to lack of demand. In fact, it’s more convenient to use apps on smartphone than on the small screen of your smartwatch. So, it makes sense that users wouldn’t care as much about these apps on the Apple Watch.

Over time, Apple has moved away from promoting the Apple Watch as a “home” for apps. It focuses primarily on fitness and health. Additionally, recent rumors suggest that Apple plans to make interactive widgets a major part of the new watchOS 10.This further confirms that dedicated apps have not proven popular enough.
