Speculation has been circulating for months that Tesla may soon unveil an ambitious Gigafactory in Mexico.

Just last year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company was exploring potential locations in Canada, Mexico, and the United States for a new manufacturing facility on that continent. The news came as he was discussing which location might be chosen for its next factory.

In October, news of a potential Tesla factory in Mexico began circulating, as Elon Musk visited the region and spoke with the local governor. Local media reports said Tesla had its eye on a property in Santa Catarina, just across the border from Monterrey in Nuevo Leon.

Following their visit, the government said it was actively exploring investment opportunities in the state.

Last month, negotiations to move a Tesla factory south of the border were finalized, with an official announcement expected within days. Government officials said Tesla would make an announcement within weeks, but two months have passed and still nothing.

Recently, negotiations escalated when Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the president of Mexico, took a more active role in the process. He said he would be hesitant to allow Tesla to build a factory in Nuevo León, a state controlled by his opponents, due to a “concern about water supply.”

Instead, Elon Musk is pushing for the development of a Tesla manufacturing plant in Mexico City's growing business district, alongside its new airport. After two separate phone calls between Lopez Obrador and Elon Musk in recent days, the two parties have moved closer to a mutual agreement.

Mexican authorities said the two spoke for a total of 75 minutes on Saturday and Monday, according to Reuters. Government officials have suggested that a deal could be finalized and announced soon.

Just ahead of tomorrow's highly anticipated Investor Day, where Tesla is expected to reveal its plans for 20 million electric vehicles to be produced each year by the end of the decade, a new rumor has emerged.

To achieve its ambitious goal, the automaker has announced that it plans to build a total of eight Gigafactories, with additional locations expected to be announced in the near future.

Tesla's Gigafactory is a revolutionary facility that is helping to shape modern society by advancing renewable energy, creating jobs, raising public awareness of electric vehicles (EVs), and providing more affordable transportation solutions to consumers worldwide.
