Tesla: 7500 charging stations for non-Tesla EVs by 2024

The Biden administration has unveiled new initiatives as part of its $7.5 billion plan to install 500,000 EV chargers on U.S. by 2030.Under these new initiatives, Tesla has committed to opening 7,500 charging stations for non-company-owned electric vehicles (EVs) by the end of 2024.

Back in 2021, Tesla announced that its open-access Supercharger (piloted in 16 European countries) would soon be coming to the U.S. Now it’s made the timeline more specific. The White House has revealed more details about the plan. Of the 7,500 charging stations that will be available for all compatible EVs, 3,500 will be new and existing 250 kW Superchargers along highway corridors. The rest will beLevel 2 Destination Charging stations (22 kW max) at hotels, restaurants, and other urban and rural locations.

To take advantage of the $7.5 billion in funding, car companies must adopt the Combined Charging System (CCS) that dominates the U.S., while also offering smartphone payment options. “No matter what EV you drive, we want to make sure you can plug in, know the price you’re paying, and charge your vehicle with a good experience,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Tesla currently uses its own chargers, but has committed to adding the CCS standard.

As mentioned above, Tesla's commitment to create 7,500 charging stations for non-Tesla electric vehicles is part of the White House's broader plan to have at least 500,000 EV chargers on roads by the end of the decade. To achieve this goal, the administration has reached out to EV manufacturers like GM and Ford, as well as ChargePoint and other EV charger manufacturers.

GM has already committed to installing up to 40,000 Level 2 stations in the U.S. and Canada as part of its Ultium Charge 360 network. Ford plans to install DC chargers at 1,920 dealerships by January 2024. Hertz also plans to install thousands of BP Pulse chargers in U.S. cities for Hertz customers and the public.

The White House plan for 500,000 EV chargers was announced early last year and is part of the US government's broader goal to increase sales of electric vehicles over conventional ones. Specifically, the government wants half of new vehicle sales in the US to be zero-emissions by 2030. Currently, there are more than 130,000 public charging stations serving more than three million EVs on the road.

Transportation is responsible for 25% of carbon emissions from human activity worldwide, according to estimates from the nonprofit International Council on Clean Transportation. Much of this pollution comes from exhaust emissions, but charging with electricity from clean or renewable sources increases the climate benefits of switching to an electric vehicle.

Tesla, being one of the most important automakers with electric vehicles, is following the government's program and will provide charging stations for other vehicles by 2024.
