Microsoft and OpenAI expand their partnership

Microsoft announced yesterday that it is expanding its partnership with OpenAI , the creator of the much-talked-about ChatGPT . The company says it is excited about the partnership and says it has made multi-billion dollar investments to accelerate revolutionary developments in technology so that everyone can benefit from it. This agreement follows Microsoft's previous investments in 2019 and 2021. The company expands its ongoing partnership with OpenAI in AI supercomputing and research and enables commercialization of the resulting advanced AI technologies

“We built our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and tools with Azure to build and run applications their.”

Through this agreement, Microsoft will significantly increase its investment in the development and use of powerful supercomputing systems that support OpenAI’s research. Microsoft is the exclusive cloud partner for OpenAI, and services will power all OpenAI workloads across products, API services, and research.

Microsoft also plans to deploy OpenAI's models across a variety of consumer and enterprise products. Rumor has it that Microsoft is preparing to take on Google by integrating ChatGPT into Bing , and the company is reportedly considering integrating some AI language technology into its Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook apps.

Microsoft hasn't disclosed exactly how much it has invested in OpenAI, but it is trying to use its close relationship to further commercialize its Azure OpenAI. Microsoft launched the service last week and it includes a number of AI models built by OpenAI, including GPT-3.5, Codex, and DALL-E. It is designed for enterprises to make use of OpenAI's models.

“The last three years of our collaboration have been great,” says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “Microsoft shares our values, and we are excited to continue our independent research and work to create advanced artificial intelligence that benefits everyone.”

Microsoft purchased an exclusive license for the underlying technology behind GPT-3 in 2020, after investing $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019. It has built a close relationship with OpenAI and also plans to add a text-to-image AI model to Bing powered by OpenAI's DALL-E 2.
