Cloudflare takes on critical infrastructure protection through DNS services for the US

Cloudflare Inc., the leading provider of security, performance, and reliability services for building a better Internet, has received an impressive $7.2 million contract from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to provide Registry and Authoritative DNS services for the .gov Top Level Domain!

“The internet has opened up a world of possibilities for citizens who want to interact with their government,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “From applying for a passport and learning health advice from local authorities to directly interacting with representatives in real time – all .gov activities need a reliable and secure DNS platform to truly earn citizens’ trust.” He also said his company is honored that the United States government has chosen its network to provide this stability and security.

CISA is the United States' leading advisor and strategic mitigation , working with them to protect against current cyber threats and invest in more resilient, secure infrastructure for a better future. CISA strengthens the nation's ability to combat cyber security by providing advanced cybersecurity measures, incident response solutions, and assessment services that safeguard federal systems and critical state/local operations.

To provide an additional layer of security for .gov domain users, CISA turned to Cloudflare to provide registry and DNS services that met the need for high DNS availability. After all, DNS is a core Internet service that forms the foundation of applications that rely on it for security reasons. CISA provides free .gov domains to U.S.-based government agencies, but it takes more than just registering a domain for Internet users to find the website. DNS services act as navigators, directing visitors to the desired website. The .gov TLD registry and DNS services are available to all U.S.-based government agencies.

By signing this agreement, Cloudflare will provide managed name servers for the .gov zone and authoritative DNS hosting for .gov domain names, allowing us to fulfill CISA's mission to achieve its goals.

  • Reducing the attack surface of infrastructure and government organizations related to .gov
  • By automating and securely managing DNS servers, configuring DNS records to make it harder for anyone to impersonate the government in email by default, and introducing new features – we seek to strengthen the protection of our network.
  • Gain visibility to better identify and prevent certain DNS ecosystem issues rather than reacting to them
