While other leading tech companies, including Amazon, Google , and Meta, have reduced their headcount, Apple has kept its own intact. A new report suggests three possible explanations for how Apple has managed to avoid layoffs.

The first explanation is that compared to other tech giants, Apple has taken a more cautious approach to expansion.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, Apple has shown restraint in hiring compared to other tech giants, which have increased their headcount between 57% and 100% in the past period.
During the pandemic, most major tech companies have significantly increased staff to cope with increased demand. Apple, however, has made some new hires, but more modestly.
From the end of fiscal year 2019 to September 2022, Apple's workforce grew by about 20% . In about the same period, Amazon 's workforce doubled, Microsoft 's workforce grew by 53%, Alphabet Inc.'s grew by 57% and Facebook owner Meta increased its staff by 94%.
The second reason Apple has managed to avoid layoffs is because, unlike other companies like Meta and Google, it hasn't hired a ton of employees for projects that may not turn a profit anytime soon. The best example here is Meta's colossal investment in the metaverse.

Apple is hiring people for projects that aren't so sure-fire, like the Apple Headset and the Apple Car, but on a much smaller scale than its competitors.
Finally, the Wall Street Journal noted that Apple generally keeps its expenses low when it comes to employee benefits. Employees pay for cafeteria meals at Apple Park, while at other companies like Google, meals are offered for free.
Additionally, Apple takes care of employee health by providing a clinic on its main campus. Employee well-being has a positive impact on the company.
It is much cheaper to prevent disease than to cure it. Health problems result in 69 million workers reporting lost days each year, reducing economic output by $260 billion annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In addition to the typical roles associated with a primary care clinic, Apple is also looking to hire “designers” who will help implement a program focused on disease prevention and promoting healthy behavior.

Having a clinic at Apple Park also means that the time employees would otherwise waste going to an outpatient doctor is reduced.
While the possibility of future layoffs at Apple cannot be ruled out, it is said that the company may reduce its workforce in another way. Instead of laying off people, the company may simply not replace people who leave the company on their own.
No company is immune to significant cuts in a volatile economic environment like the one we’re currently in, and Apple is also facing the same business challenges that have plagued other tech giants. It’s expected to report its first quarterly sales decline in more than three years next month. It has also slowed hiring in some areas. So far, though, Apple has managed to avoid layoffs thanks to the smart moves above.
