Historically, you could find the version number by opening the “About this app” section of a listing and scrolling down to “App info.”
As of today, “Version” is no longer there , and “Updated on” is at the top. This information has disappeared only for the phone version of the apps. Oddly, it remains for the Wear OS and Android/Google TV apps.

Meanwhile, version numbers are still showing up on the Google Play website. This issue doesn't seem to be related to (or just affect) apps that only say "Varies with device."

Version numbers don't mean as much as they used to, as many major app developers have shifted their strategy. Instead of pushing changes to all users with new app releases, companies are testing slightly different UI layouts and sometimes even content selection to figure out what works best for the majority of people. This means that most of the time, meaningful updates are released via a server-side push rather than a package update on your phone. However, knowing the version number can sometimes be useful when you're having problems, and can serve as an important part of troubleshooting.
