iPhone: Will it have technology that will make it easier to use in the rain?

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a new patent called “ Modifying Functionality of Electronic Device Upon Exposure to Moisture ” that could make it easier to use an iPhone in the rain. Most phones are built to withstand a little moisture, but what about typing when the screen is wet or when you have to use the phone with wet fingers?

Apple is now planning to adapt the iPhone screen to make it easier to use in light rain, steady rain, or even when the device is used underwater. Mistakes on the screen caused by liquid will be detected by the technology mentioned in the patent and eliminated. The design of the screen may change slightly to improve the accuracy of pressing when the screen is wet.

At the same time, the iPhone's display would automatically switch to a pressure-sensitive display, similar to Apple's now-defunct Force Touch and 3D Touch technologies. In this case, the display would also have to distinguish between pressure from human finger taps and pressure from drops and rain that might fall on the screen.

Additionally, a leaked image of the technology that will allow the user to use the camera in the rain shows an app that offers settings for “dry,” “wet,” and “underwater” modes. Depending on the mode, changes are made to the camera UI. For example, in wet mode, some features are removed from the UI, while in underwater mode, some controls are replaced with very large buttons. They are easier to activate when using the iPhone underwater, but have limited functionality. The iPhone screen will also show the current depth of the device (when used underwater) so that the user can keep it within the limits of the device’s water.

It's worth noting that Apple receives several patents over the course of a year, but not all of them result in new technology that is immediately implemented. Therefore, it is not yet clear whether the company is interested in implementing this technology directly into devices. However, it would certainly make it easier to type and generally use the iPhone in the rain.
