Crypto Miners Are Selling GPUs at Half Price Due to Market Drop

Crypto miners are looking to get rid of their GPUs and this might be a good opportunity to buy a used GPU at half price.

The crypto market continues to plummet, which has led many crypto miners to exit the market or scale back their operations, leaving them with valuable computer parts they no longer need. Some of these crypto miners, many from China and South Asia (where electricity is cheaper), are now taking this hardware and dumping it on e-commerce sites. As a result, GPUs that would normally cost $500 to $600 are selling for about half that price on the second-hand market.

As noted by PC Gamer, GPUs are suddenly flooding the market, a trend that is likely due to a number of factors. The main one being how crypto prices have plummeted since this winter. Now that it looks like the market won’t recover anytime soon, crypto miners are giving up on selling their GPUs. And it’s not like they’re selling GeForce RTX 3060s in their original condition. These GPUs have been used for Crypto mining, which uses tons of electricity. Buyers have discovered that these RTX 3060s were cheap for a reason — many of them are defective after prolonged use. So, common sense seems to be that you shouldn’t be too eager to grab some used GPUs from an unknown buyer.

However, there has been some debate in the tech community about how degraded these graphics cards. PC World claims that buying a used graphics card from an experienced Crypto miner is better than buying a GPU from a gamer (who tends to overclock their GPUs). YouTuber Linus Sebastian tested some GPUs that were used for crypto mining and found that used graphics cards can perform well—if they were carefully maintained by their previous owner. So, if you have to buy a GPU from a Crypto miner who wasted a ton of electricity on Crypto, then you should at least find a reputable seller. Good luck with that, by the way.

However, it is annoying that Nvidia has benefited immensely from the crypto boom, so much so that, in fact, the company was hit with a federal fine for trying to hide how Crypto mining increased its profits. At least this Crypto nightmare is finally over and we will all undoubtedly see much more reasonable prices on graphics cards very, very soon.
