Oppo: For the first time, it will present its AR technology in North America

Oppo will introduce its augmented reality (AR) glasses, OPPO Air Glass and OPPO AR Glass, in North America.

Oppo, the Chinese smartphone and other electronics maker, is the fourth-largest smartphone brand in the world after Samsung, Apple , and Xiaomi, but it doesn't yet ship its devices to the United States. However, that may change soon.

A few days ago, Oppo announced that it will be showcasing its augmented reality (AR) glasses, OPPO Air Glass and OPPO AR Glass, during the Augmented World Expo USA 2022.The event will take place from June 1-3 in Santa Clara, California. Oppo announced the Air Glass in China last December and the device was released in January.

OPPO Air Glass

Unlike most augmented reality (AR) glasses, Oppo’s Air Glass has a unique single-lens design and displays data from an phone with an average brightness of 1400 nits. This is brighter than the typical 1000 nits (1200 nits maximum) found on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The device is very lightweight and comfortable to wear. The inside of the frame includes a magnetic attachment that allows the device to be quickly and easily attached to a custom eyeglass frame. The glasses are equipped with the Spark Micro Projector . They support interactions via touch, voice, head movement, and hand movement, allowing users to access the information they need faster and easier.

Additionally, the Oppo Air Glass is powered by the same Snapdragon 4100 used in some Wear OS smartwatches like the TicWatch Pro 3.

OPPO AR Glass

On the other hand, Oppo AR Glasses are more like traditional augmented reality glasses. The device includes two lenses. The glasses offer real-time language translation and 3D depth mapping. They are also equipped with technology that allows for better brightness and contrast.

But why would the launch happen, since Oppo doesn’t sell its devices in North America? Perhaps the company wants to bring its products to the country, given that its unit, OnePlus, does. As early as February 2019, Oppo had said it wanted to bring its devices to America. However, the company wanted to conquer another market first. At the time, Oppo’s Alen Wu, head of overseas operations, said through an interpreter that before heading to America, the company would need to establish its foothold in Europe.

However, the launch at Augmented World Expo USA 2022 could also be for another reason. Perhaps Oppo wants to showcase the augmented reality (AR) glasses in North America to attract more developers for the devices before releasing the glasses in Europe, where the company already sells phones.

Yi Xu, Director of XR Technology at Oppo, says: “Our belief that AR can be used to create a new digital world that is entirely based on the real world has been the driving force behind investment and research in technologies AR.”

Oppo Air Glass / AR Glass: Can work on Android phones that are not Oppo

It's worth noting that Oppo is using Snapdragon Spaces, an open mixed-reality (XR) platform that allows companies to develop AR apps without having the basic tools needed to do so. Since the platform uses Qualcomm's mobile hardware, theoretically, Oppo's Air Glass and AR Glass could work on Android that aren't made by Oppo but are powered by Snapdragon chips.
