Add and remove words to your personal Google Docs dictionary

When you write in a Google Doc, you may have noticed that not all the words you want are in the dictionary. You may write the name of a person or product that is not in Webster's dictionary. Fortunately, Google Docs offers a personal dictionary for you to use.

If you set Google Docs to automatically correct spelling or run a spell , you may be wasting valuable time getting Docs to accept what you type. But if you add words to your personal dictionary, then you can continue composing your document without automatic changes or failed spell checks.

There are a few ways to add words to your personal dictionary in Google Docs. You can use a shortcut for a word that Docs identifies as misspelled, or you can open your personal dictionary and add it manually.

The words you add are in the personal dictionary for any existing or new documents you create in Google.

By default, Docs places a red underline under a word that appears to be misspelled. If you click on that word, you may see an alternative word. In the same tiny pop-up box, click the three dots and select “Add to Dictionary.”

Alternatively, right-click on the word and select “Add to Dictionary”.

Both actions remove the red underline and place the word in your personal dictionary. The word will no longer be identified as a misspelling.

Another way to add a word is to open the personal dictionary and enter the word manually. Go to Tools > Spelling and Grammar and select "Personal Dictionary" from the pop-up menu.

Enter the word in the box at the top, select “Add” and then click “OK” to save.

You'll see your word and any others you add in the box at the bottom.

To view your words or remove one, go to Tools > Spelling and Grammar > Personal Dictionary from the menu.

Select the word you want to remove and click the trash can icon to the right of it. You will not be asked to confirm the deletion . Click “ OK ” when you are done.

Please note that if you remove a word from your personal dictionary, it may be recognized as a misspelling again.
