Apple Watch Series 8: Will it have a body temperature sensor?

If Apple sticks to its usual schedule, we'll get our first look at the Apple Watch Series 8 in September. In June at WWDC, we'll likely see watchOS 9 for the first time. Both events are months away, but rumors of a Watch update are growing.

Apple is expected to unveil up to three watch models this year, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Along with the Series 8 and a revamped Watch SE, there could be a ruggedized version. This one would be aimed at professional athletes.

With watchOS 9, Apple may introduce an upgraded Low Power Mode. In addition to allowing users to see the time in Low Power Mode, their watch could run certain apps and other functions.

The Apple Watch has always been focused on health, and the Series 8 could add a body temperature sensor to the device. Initially, it seems the plan is to help users with fertility planning. It could later be used to tell users if their body temperature is high, although you might not see a numerical reading.

Additionally, Apple is expected to build on atrial fibrillation (AFib) tracking with a new “load” feature for watchOS 0 that detects how often a person is in AFib over a period of time. Additionally, more workout and running metrics could be available in the Workout app.

As for health features that users shouldn't expect to see on the Apple Watch Series 8, the blood pressure monitor isn't likely to arrive this year. Gurman says Apple has had some issues with the technology, which is expected to look for signs of hypertension, and it likely won't be ready for another two years. Another long-rumored feature that likely won't make it to the Series 8 devices is non-invasive blood. That's not expected for several more years, according to Gurman.

The report touches on some iPhone features that could arrive in the medium term. The Health app could get improved sleep tracking along with a feature that WILL allow users to scan medication bottles and remind them when to take their pills. The latest smartphone lineup could also feature satellite connectivity, which could allow users to send messages to emergency personnel and report incidents via satellite networks. Apple is said to be working on similar features for future generations of the Apple Watch.
