The past six months have seen some of the most widespread and alarming cyberattacks against digital infrastructure in history – against public utilities, private sector companies, government agencies, and people living around the world.

“We are deeply concerned about these trends. Security is a cornerstone of our product strategy. We have dedicated teams like Project Zero focused on finding and fixing vulnerabilities across the web to make the internet safer for all of us,” said Kent Walker, SVP of Global Affairs at Google.

Google said that in the US, the company is committed to supporting the White House's latest cybersecurity executive order, which takes critical steps to improve America's cyber defenses in key areas.

Google said it strongly supports modernizing computing systems, making security simple and scalable by default.

“As we saw with the SolarWinds and Microsoft Exchange attacks , proprietary systems and limitations on interoperability and data portability can amplify a network’s vulnerability, helping attackers scale their efforts,” Walker emphasized.

“At Google, we have emphasized securing the software supply chain and have long built technologies and supported standards that enhance software integrity and security,” he added.

Taking a tough stance on the rise in ransomware attacks, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Justice have announced that they will treat these cyber incidents as terrorist attacks.

Substantially improving cybersecurity, Google said, will require the public and private sectors to collaborate in areas such as sharing information about cyber threats and developing a comprehensive defensive security posture to protect against ransomware.

“Governments need support across the industry and we are ready and willing to play our part,” Walker said.
