The Lord of the Rings is making the leap from the big screen to its smaller cousin. If you're interested in JRR Tolkien's fantasy world, you'll already know that a TV series is soon to be created by Amazon Prime Video in partnership with the Tolkien Estate.

We've already seen two films – one is better than the other, of course – but this is the first time a television series based on Tolkien's literature has been attempted.
While the series' release is still a long way off, there's plenty of information available online about the cast, production, and more. However, finding it all would take a lot of time, so we're here to show you everything you need to know about Amazon's Lord of the Rings series.
- Where can I watch it? On Amazon Prime Video
- When will it be released? Probably in 2021
- What did Amazon pay for The Lord of the Rings? $250 million just for the rights – and that's before production
- Are the Lord of the Rings movies on Amazon Prime? Yes
Lord of the Rings on Amazon: When will it be released?
At the moment, it's not certain. Filming has already been underway since February 2020. Of course, the production of the series has had its fair share of issues. Elissa Cadwell was injured just days after filming began on the first episodes, while the Covid-19 pandemic caused production to be halted in New Zealand in March 2020.

In July 2020, New Zealand government minister Phil Twyford granted exemptions to seven film and TV productions. This allowed cast and crew members to enter the country – during the pandemic – while its borders remained closed. Lord of the Rings was among these projects, and filming resumed in July 2020.
British director Wayne Che Yip will direct four of the eight episodes of the series, with JA Bayona having directed the first two episodes of the series, including the pilot episode.

Filming is still ongoing in New Zealand, so we shouldn't expect Amazon's Lord of the Rings to be released anytime soon. If filming wraps in the coming months, it's likely the TV series will be released in Q4 2021.
It would be a good time for Amazon if the Lord of the Rings series is released on the winter television schedule.

It all depends on how long the series takes to develop. Most recently, Australian actor Tom Budge left the series after Amazon Studios decided to take his character in a different direction.
