Virgin Media: Data breach of 900,000 customers

Virgin Media , a UK phone, TV and internet service provider yesterday data breach , revealed a . The breach was caused by a database company that was exposed online and was not password protected.

The result was that the personal information of approximately 900,000 customers (approximately 15% of the company's total customers) was exposed.

The exposed data varies depending on the user, but likely includes names, home addresses, emails, phone numbers, and some technical information and details about the products .

Virgin Media stated that the database in question was used for marketing activities and therefore did not contain sensitive information, such as passwords or details customer

The company said it has already notified the UK Data Protection Office about the breach.

Virgin Media itself informed its customers about the exposure of data . The company warned customers, through a statement, that criminals could use their details and carry out phishing attacks.

"Based on the investigation, Virgin Media believes the database was breached at least once, but we do not know the extent of the access or whether customer information was actually breached and used," said Lutz Schüler, CEO of Virgin Media.

In an interview with the Financial Times (which first published the story), Schüler said there was no evidence to suggest that customer data was misused.

The company said it is personally contacting each of the affected customers to inform them of the incident.

Virgin Media is the second telecommunications company to disclose a data breach in the past 24 hours. Yesterday, US -based T -Mobile also disclosed a data breach that affected both the company's staff and customers.
