Google to Huawei users: Our core apps are not available for sideloading

Google , through a new announcement, has clarified that its core apps , such as Gmail and YouTube, not be available on new Huawei devices will due to the US ban on the Chinese company. Not only will they not be pre-installed, but users will not be able to download (or sideload) them.

Google published a document to the Android community about Huawei being blacklisted by the US. This was done last May, but the bans are still in effect. The document was published now, due to the expected release of new Huawei smartphones

According to 9to5Google, Google advised users not to install (sideloading) its Android apps on new, uncertified devices Huawei

"Due to government restrictions, Google apps and services are not available for installation on new Huawei devices," writes Tristan Ostrowski, Google's legal director for Android and Play.

Ostrowski explained that Google is constantly receiving questions about new Huawei models and whether apps can be used on those devices. The company emphasizes that the ban is not up to it. Google has no problem giving its apps to Huawei, but US law does not allow it.

It also highlights why users inside and outside the US should not use methods, such as sideloading, to bypass the ban.

Google explains that it is prohibited from working with Huawei or providing Google apps, such as Gmail, Maps, YouTube, the Play Store , and more.

If users try to download the apps on their new devices, they are likely to encounter security issues. For this reason, Google advises users not to sideload apps on Huawei devices that do not have Play Protect built-in.

“Due to the government restrictions described above, new Huawei device models released to the public after May 16, 2019 do not go through this security nor do they have Play Protect built in. This means they are not ‘certified’ and cannot use Google apps and services,” Ostrowski wrote.

This means that sideloaded Google apps " will not work reliably " because uncertified devices may already be compromised. Additionally, sideloaded apps may have been modified or tampered with to put users at risk

Users can check if their device is Play Protect certified. They can do this by opening the Google Play Store, pressing 'Menu' and selecting 'Settings'. If the certification is available, it will be marked 'Play Protect certification'.

The US bans aren't going to end anytime soon, which is why Huawei is trying to attract developers to build apps on Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).
