Kalamata stops in the 5G pilot program

The Kalamata City Council voted to stop the 5G pilot program, adopting the views of a group of citizens who asked for the "experiment" to be stopped for health reasons.

Kalamata stops in the 5G pilot program

Unbelievable and yet true!. The Kalamata City Council, with votes of 16 in favor and 13 against, decided to stop the 5G program, adopting the view that their city is becoming an "experiment with the Kalamatians as lab animals" and that the scientific measurements of "Demokritos" that measure radiation much lower than the permissible limit (0.2 volts with a limit of 47) are unacceptable.

They requested that the contract with Wind not be renewed before new measurements are made, which will be announced at a scientific event in the first ten days of January.

In fact, at the Municipal Council meeting, a text was read by the representatives of the protesting citizens, which, among other things, characterizes the radiation from the 2G, 3G, and 4G networks as dangerous, while it is mentioned, among other things, that there is a plan... to sterilize the people of Kalamata with a parallel influx of immigrants, in order to change the demographic composition of the city!!!!.

The city of Kalamata was selected by WIND to implement a pilot 5G installation program. Similar programs have already been implemented in other cities and regions of Greece by other companies. For example, COSMOTE is running the same program in the Municipality of Zografou.

The company WIND responded to the Kalamata Municipal Council with the following information note:

"Even if our country is trying to get on the wagon of development after 10 painful years of crisis? Even if everyone recognizes that the "4th Industrial Revolution", with the development of new generation networks with optical fibers and 5G, has already begun and Greece should not miss this train either? Even if our country needs investments, it needs perspective, it needs vision and determination to stop the "hemorrhage" of the brain drain? Technophobia and digital illiteracy threaten to take us decades back, as is evident from the decision of the Kalamata city council to discontinue the pilot implementation of the 5th generation mobile telephony network (5G).

"Kalamata had every chance of becoming a model city in terms of digital infrastructure and of being at the forefront of technological developments and development, even compared to the country's major urban centers. Instead, it risks forfeiting this privilege and wasting valuable time, making its citizens victims of misinformation, ignorance and, at times, political exploitation of an issue that should be a national goal and priority.".

»With the state's expressed intention to auction 5G licenses in 2020, but with a hostile environment that seems to be shaped by individual local governments, investments are at risk of being delayed. They will come, however, to other countries that Greeks like to consider models, such as the Scandinavian countries. In these countries, which, it should be noted, are among the most stringent in security matters, investments in new generation telecommunications infrastructure are progressing rapidly, so that their citizens can meet the developments, since by 2025 58% of the world's population will have access to 5G networks and services.

»Greece is at a crossroads: it will either make leaps into the future, utilizing infrastructure, or it will monitor developments and try to catch up with them with bated breath. Boldness, determination and a responsible attitude and information from those who make central decisions are non-negotiable ingredients for the development of new technologies and innovations in Greece. At the point where our country is today - moving in technology infrastructure with a 2-3 year difference compared to the first speed of Europe - it is crucial not to waste any more time and not to widen the digital divide.

»Digital technology will transform the entire global economy and society, and it will do so very quickly. The European Commission estimates that for every €1 billion invested in the development of the Internet, an average of 9,300 jobs are created. 5G mobile technology has the potential to unlock revenues of $12.3 trillion across a wide range of sectors in the global economy. It is estimated that from 2020 to 2035, the total contribution of 5G to global GDP will be equivalent to an economy the size of India today, the seventh largest in the world. It is no coincidence that nine out of ten people believe that 5G will enable the creation of new products and services that have not yet been invented.

"In any case, as it is natural to be concerned about any new technology and its impact on public health, it is easy to cultivate fear as a result of lack of knowledge, misinformation and often technophobia. That is why there are competent scientific organizations, global and national, such as the Hellenic Atomic Energy Commission - Demokritos (which has been carrying out thousands of measurements for years), which the Kalamata municipal council did not take the trouble to consult, in order to properly and officially inform its citizens.

"Greece has a great opportunity ahead of it. New generation networks, such as fiber optics and 5G, can play a catalytic role in the development of the economy, contribute greatly to the recovery of Greek businesses and revitalize many sectors.
However, this will not happen if we do not stop raising obstacles to this ongoing effort."
