The popular programming language Python has overtaken the former dominant language Java to become the second most popular language on the GitHub website.
Python now surpasses Java in the number of contributors to the repository. By this metric, Python is second only to JavaScript, which has held the top spot since 2014, according to GitHub's 2019 report.
Another interesting aspect of GitHub 's report is its ranking among the fastest-growing languages. Google 's Dart programming language and Flutter are particularly used by developers on GitHub to create UIs for iOS and Android apps.
Dart was the fastest growing language between 2018 and 2019, up 532%. It was followed by Rust , developed by Mozilla, which grew by 235%.
Microsoft is experimenting with Rust in the Windows codebase, due to it being designed to address memory-related security flaws that have been the dominant type of Microsoft for the past decade.
Last year, Kotlin, the programming language supported by Google for developing Android apps, was the fastest-growing language on GitHub. It's not in the top 10 languages yet, but it's still growing by 182% year-over-year.
Other languages that are among the fastest growing are HCL, PowerShell, Apex, Python, Assembly, and Go.

But the real champion in GitHub's report is Python, whose popularity is being driven by computer science professionals and hobbyists.
