2018 doesn't seem to be the year of CCleaner. The Windows app hasn't been the same lately. Recent updates to the app have brought pop-up ads and no privacy options.
The culmination was with the release of CCleaner 5.45 in August, when the app started collecting data via telemetry. Piriform/Avast was forced to recall that version.
The new version CCleaner 5.46 was released at the end of August 2018, but as it turns out, things haven't changed much. A user on Piriform's official forum reported on September 6, 2018 that the CCleaner app was automatically updated, ignoring the end-user's settings, as it was set not to check for and install updates.
Piriform confirmed the forced updates in the new version and claimed that they were necessary to “comply with legal requirements and give users more autonomy and transparency over their privacy settings.”
But what makes automatic updates much worse for users is that privacy settings are reset to their default values when the app is upgraded. So some users will be wondering how CCleaner was upgraded and how the app’s privacy settings were changed.
It seems that the creators of the CCleaner app added a critical update feature to version 5.36 that can override the user’s update preferences. According to the company, automatic updates are in the best interest of users.
It should be noted that forced updates are not something we only see in the CCleaner app.
So what can you do? You can accept it, and continue with the app as if nothing happened. We of course recommend that you delete CCleaner and any CCleaner that does not respect the end user and use an alternative application, or Windows itself.
Finally, let us mention that today a new version of CCleaner (5.47) was released, but the company withdrew it again “due to a setting not being saved correctly”.
The conclusions are yours…
