Cryptocurrency: Types of Crimes and Ways to Protect Yourself

Cryptocurrency When we talk about cryptocurrency, crime always comes to mind, especially cybercrime. Cryptos are vulnerable to cyberattacks .Hackers use various methods, such as scam emails but also more sophisticated approaches.

Criminals are always on the lookout to exploit any vulnerability in wallets, exchanges, or any mistake cryptocurrency users may make in general.

One reason cybercrime is on the rise in the cryptocurrency space is the lack of regulation, protection, and user rights. For example, if someone steals your money, it is very difficult to get it back. Users are responsible for the security of their crypto.

Types of crimes

Bitcoin is often targeted by cybercriminals. The reason is that it holds a high value. For example, 1 BTC is equivalent to about £4,200. In general, crypto theft is a common occurrence. There have been many thefts and hackings of exchanges, and users' funds have been transferred to the wallets of the thieves.

A more extreme crime, but not uncommon, is kidnapping. In the past, the wife of one of the richest men in Norway was kidnapped. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of €9 million in the cryptocurrency Monero for her release.

Some criminals have started using very sophisticated methods. Sometimes victims realize what has happened when it is too late. That is, when their money has already disappeared.

Protection

Since there is no official protection from anywhere, users themselves must take responsibility for protecting their cryptos. Initially, everyone should do thorough research on the wallets and exchanges they want to use, stay informed about them, and read the comments and observations of other cryptocurrency users, in order to have as complete a picture as possible.

It is also recommended that users search for and become familiar with different types of exchanges and wallets (e.g. decentralized exchanges, paper wallet), as they offer different capabilities.

Most important of all, of course, is using best security practices, such as two-factor authentication, maximum private key protection, and avoiding depositing large amounts of cryptocurrency into mobile wallets.

There are several ways to protect yourself, although some changes need to be made in the cryptocurrency space so that security is not solely based on the user. Until then, each user must choose some protection measures based on their needs and funds. People who have huge amounts of cryptocurrency should take even more care to protect themselves by using more specialized tools.
