5 basic steps for greater data center security

Data center: We all know by now that Cloud technology has changed our lives. The cloud is here to let us know that our data and information is stored securely in data centers around the world.

These centers are encrypted, secured, and spread across a variety of disks. So, our data is safe from a potential intrusion, but is the same true for data centers? protocol security for your data center.

5 basic steps for greater data center security

  1. Isolate the Network

Any unauthorized person gains access to the system because there is a vulnerability in the network. It happens all the time. Attackers usually target unused accounts or services and camouflage their files using those names in the system directories.

This can be avoided by isolating the network (through the use of out-of-band management networks) that do not allow any back-door entry to hackers. Thus, the network is not a target.

  1. Temperature

Keep your server room cool so your hardware doesn't overheat and have to be sent in for maintenance.

You can prevent overheating by maintaining the room temperature in a cool range 24 hours a day. Prevent heat from entering the room which will lead to equipment failure and reduce the lifespan of your components.

  1. Keep track of what you have

If you don't know how much you spent compared to how much money came in, there's no way to know where you stand financially.

Use data center infrastructure management (DCIM) to keep track of your assets. These programs allow you to improve data center infrastructure design, plan, and improve system operations.

The software will show you all the open ports that could be attacked, making it easier for you to use IT service management solutions.

  1. Monitoring

Having proper surveillance systems in place is a priority for thorough security. It is your first line of defense against intruders. This means installing security cameras around the perimeter of your data center. Metal detectors should also be installed to ensure that no one removes material from the data center.

  1. Building design

Datacenters and server rooms should be dedicated to housing IT infrastructure.  This means they should not be located on a main road and should be subject to frequent security patrols.
