The American organization National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) admitted today that it was breached by hackers.
In an internal memo sent to all employees, the agency said an unknown attacker gained access to one of its servers, downloading the personal data of current and former employees. Social Security numbers were also leaked, according to NASA.
The organization said it discovered the hack on Oct. 23, nearly two months ago. It's unclear why it waited nearly two months before notifying its employees, but it's common for U.S. authorities to ask hacked organizations to delay notifying affected victims while they investigate an incident.
NASA confirmed that it is working with federal authorities “to examine the servers and determine the scope of the potential data breach and identify any individuals who may have been affected.”
The agency still doesn't know the scope of the breach or the number of employees affected. In its memo today, NASA said it is alerting all its employees to be on the lookout for potential fraud.
"Once (the victims) are identified, NASA will provide specific information to those employees, past and present.".
The agency said the investigation into the hack "will take time" and that it does not believe any of its missions are at risk from the hack.
