Windows 10 is an extremely popular operating system from Microsoftthat is updated regularly. In fact, the software was recently overhauled as part of the October 2018 Update, which introduced a range of new features.
One of the biggest new features that arrived in the software was a refreshed clipboard system that leveraged the power of cloud computing to make the copy‑and‑paste process across multiple devices easier than ever.
One of the best features of Windows 10, however, is the ability for users to use Microsoft's virtual assistant, Cortana, to perform certain tasks and answer questions.
Cortana is integrated into the Windows 10 platform, which means the assistant is available simply by speaking to your computer.
Such accessibility methods do not currently exist for other virtual assistants such as Amazon's Alexa.
Instead, other assistants present greater barriers for users, which means there are button combinations that must be pressed or certain applications must be opened to benefit from them.
However, it appears that this could change in a new version of Windows 10, which could offer the ability to use third‑party developers' digital assistants.
A Twitter user named Albacore posted an image of a test version of Windows 10, which suggests that Microsoft could soon allow other assistants to be used only via voice.
Furthermore, Albacore insisted that Microsoft could soon allow users to replace Cortana completely’ with another virtual assistant.
He wrote in a tweet: “It appears that Microsoft will let users replace Cortana on the taskbar, with another assistant of their choice”.
In response, another Twitter user, WalkingCat, stated that internal APIs in Windows 10 that mention a Cortana replacement suggest that this functionality could be on the way.
Amazon released its Alexa app in the Microsoft Store last month, allowing Windows 10 fans to use its assistant.
At that time, the tech company said: “The convenience of Alexa, now on your computer.»
“With Alexa on your computer you can simplify your life and use your voice to do more things. Just press and ask Alexa to check your calendar, create lists, play music, answer questions, read the news and much more. Alexa on your computer makes it even easier to control your smart home from anywhere, using just your voice. Whether you are at home or on the move, Alexa is designed to make your life easier.”
Although the tighter integration of third-party developers' digital assistants into Microsoft's operating system has been rumored, nothing has been officially confirmed by the American technology company.
