Earlier this month, the monthly update for Windows 7 caused some problems on devices and contained an activation issue. The update, KB4480970, released on January 8th, brought security bugs as Microsoft attempted to patch vulnerabilities in the operating system.

This was true up to now, as the company announced that the monthly upgrade is unrelated to the bug that was observed. Moreover, recently some users reported a new bug on computers as an activation bug, for which the latest upgrade was deemed responsible. Company representatives stated that some Windows 7 users report issues as «activation failures» while also receiving bogus notifications from the 8th of the month.
It appears that the issue has been fixed, as on January 12, Microsoft updated its page again to state that the activation issue was not caused by the KB4480970 update and was simply a coincidence that occurred shortly after its release. The activation bug was fixed immediately, so similar behavior should not be observed on devices running Windows 7.
The appearance of this problem was random with the release of the two January updates, known as KB4480960 and KB4480970. It should be noted here that there is absolutely no relationship between them. Specifically, the error appears to have been related to the backend of Microsoft Activation and the Validation Servers. However, according to the company, as of today this particular problem has been resolved.
Additionally, two days earlier Microsoft announced a new patch to resolve the network issue caused by the monthly update KB4480960 on Windows 7. Regarding this specific update, there is a final bug that is expected to be fixed immediately, because according to the company it can cause serious damage to applications that use a Microsoft Jet database with the Microsoft Access 97 file format. Nevertheless, there should be no reason for concern from the users' side, as it will be resolved soon.
