Microsoft begins re-release of Windows 10 October update

WindowsMicrosoft Windows 10 October 2018 Update after it was pulled due to data removal issues over the weekend. The company says there were only a few reports of data loss. “We have fully investigated all reports of data loss, identified and fixed all known issues in the update, and conducted internal validation,” said John Cable, director of program management for Windows Servicing and Delivery.

Microsoft is now re-releasing the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to Windows Insiders, before pushing it more broadly to consumers. “We will carefully review the results, feedback, and diagnostic data from our program before moving forward with a broader re-release,” Cable explains.

It appears that the bug that caused the files to be deleted is related to Windows 10 users who had enabled Known Folder Redirection to redirect folders like Documents, Pictures, and Screenshots from their default location. Microsoft introduced code in its most recent update to delete empty and duplicate folders, but it appears that some of the folders it deleted were not empty. Microsoft has developed patches to address a variety of issues related to these folder moves, and these fixes are currently being tested with Windows Insiders.

Speaking of Windows Insiders, Microsoft's testing community had flagged some of these issues before the update was released. Microsoft seems to be acknowledging this, as the company is making some changes to its Windows 10 feedback tool to ensure testers can flag the severity of bug reports.

Microsoft will now monitor feedback related to this re-released Windows 10 October 2018 update and will officially push it to consumers once it is confident that there is "no further impact" to users.
