Fuchsia OS could replace Android in 5 years

AndroidPreviously, there was mention of a new operating system from Google, called Fuchsia OS, which is considered a successor to Android.

A recent Bloomberg reveals that engineers working on it plan to initially deploy the new operating system to voice-controlled devices like smart speakers and gradually to other devices like laptops and mobile phones. The change could begin within the next few years.

The Project Fuchsia OS program started to overcome the challenges faced by Android and is more suitable for voice-controlled devices. The operating system will have the same look and feel across all devices.

With Android, which relies on partners for most of its functionality, it is difficult to keep up with the constantly evolving artificial intelligence technology.

The developments in the Fuchsia operating system

Google started working on the Fuchsia OS operating system, an open-source operating system, in 2016 with a team of 100 engineers. That same year, Google also allowed other developers to engage with the operating system's code.

In 2017, David Burke, the vice president of Android Engineering at Google, publicly acknowledged Fuchsia OS and said it is an early‑stage experimental program. The operating system's logo changed that same year. Google also released the UI of Fuchsia Armadillo.

Now, Bloomberg reports that the engineers working on the project have a “big‑picture plan” for the operating system. It could replace Android gradually according to their statements.

Can Fuchsia OS replace Android?

It's not as easy as it sounds. Android is used by 80% of smartphones worldwide. However, with the recent record fine of $5 billion on Google for violating antitrust law, the company is eager to develop something that is not as dependent on smartphone manufacturers as Android.

Google denies any plans for Fuchsia

After Bloomberg's announcement that engineers are planning to replace Android with Fuchsia OS within the «next decade», Google told CNET that there are no plans for Fuchsia yet and it is just one of many experimental open‑source projects.

Currently, the Fuchsia operating system is nothing more than an open-source project that is in the development phase. There have been reports that there are disagreements at Google regarding the security features of Fuchsia OS and how it should be integrated into different devices.

Only time will tell if the rumors turn out to be true and whether we will eventually see devices in the future that run on Fuchsia OS.
