This year looks like we'll be seeing a lot of new Android devices from Samsung, LG, Huawei, Sony, Alcatel, and Asus. For some of these manufacturers, we know exactly what they'll be launching. And this year, their big trump card is smartphones.
LG, for example, announced a new version of the LG V30, which will retain the same look as the V30, but will come with a bunch of AI-powered accessories, especially when it comes to photography. It's not known exactly when the new model will launch, and the company hasn't scheduled an event for its unveiling.
Samsung is also set to launch its new flagship phone, the Galaxy S9, on February 25. Thanks to a steady stream of leaks, we know pretty much everything about the phone. We even know what some of its accessories, like the DeX Pad, will be like.
Rumored specs for the Galaxy S9 include a 5.8-inch AMOLED display, Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and a single camera on the back. Its bigger sibling, the Galaxy S9+, will have a 6.2-inch display, 6GB of RAM, and a dual, vertically-oriented camera on the back.
Huawei also has an event planned for February 25th, but we don't know exactly what the company will unveil. It could be a new phone, but Huawei also announced an event for March 27th in Paris, so it's highly likely we won't see a new flagship smartphone before then.
The company's announcement for the event has a tagline that says "Experience new horizons," but that could literally mean anything.
However, previous rumors claim that Huawei is set to launch the P20, which will be a big leap forward from its current flagship model, the P10. It is rumored to come in three versions: P20, P20 Plus, and P20 Lite, with the first two variants sporting a triple (!) 40-megapixel rear camera.
As for Sony, rumors say that at least one new phone is coming and – as with all Sony flagships – we should probably expect a lot of attention to the camera.
Another topic that will be discussed this year is 5G. Although it's far from becoming mainstream, the next-generation mobile standard is coming in the next few years, and we'll likely see some demonstrations of its insane speeds in Barcelona.
MWC will officially take place in Barcelona from February 26 to March 1.
