As we mentioned in our previous article, Microsoft just a few hours ago unveiled the Surface Book 2, an announcement that coincided with the release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. As expected, during the unveiling there was an extensive reference to comparing the new Surface to MacBook Apple's
Microsoft says the Surface Book 2 is twice as powerful as the MacBook Pro without compromising on battery performance, as it can last 70% longer than Apple's device per charge. Additionally, Microsoft has praised the Surface Book 2's appearance, highlighting that it has 35% fewer pixels than Apple's model.
Without a doubt, the 15-inch Surface Book was created to compete with Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro as Microsoft has been focusing on smaller-screen devices for a while now.
But let's take a look at the specifications of the two devices.
The Surface Book features a 15-inch PixelSense display with a resolution of 3240 x 2160 pixels and 260 PPI. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio and a contrast ratio of 1600:1. The Apple model, on the other hand, features a 15.4-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2880×1800 pixels and 220 PPI.
In terms of processors and RAM , the Surface Book 2 comes with the 8th generation Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor that runs at 4.2 GHz in Max Turbo mode and is paired with 16 GB of 1866Mhz LPDDR3 RAM. Apple has opted for a 3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor that can be boosted to a maximum speed of 4.1GHz in turbo mode and which is paired with 16GB of 2133MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory.
The storage options are almost the same, with the MacBook getting a higher score, as it can be upgraded up to 2TB, while the Surface Book's highest level is 1TB.
The graphics card on the Surface Book 2 is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of GDDR5 graphics memory, while Apple went with the Radeon Pro 560 with 4GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching to Intel HD Graphics 630 for less demanding tasks.
In terms of ports, the Surface Book 2 has pretty much everything you need in a modern laptop, including 2 x USB 3.1, 1 x USB-C, 2 x Surface Connect ports, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack. Apple, on the other hand, has taken a more simplistic approach and only offers USB-C and a 3.5mm audio jack.
Microsoft promised that the Surface Book 2 can last at least 17 hours per charge, while Apple claims battery life is just 10 hours.
The Microsoft Surface Book 2 costs $3,299 while the MacBook Pro costs $4,199.
The choice is yours…
