The first quarter of this year has seen a number of exciting new flagships. But there are also a few manufacturers that have chosen not to reveal their new smartphones during CES and MWC. One of them is Motorola, which is working on the successor to its last flagship, the Moto Z.
A recent report reveals that this year's flagship will be called the Moto Z2. It seems that the new smartphone will retain the connector pins on the back, thus allowing the phone to be compatible with many Moto Mods modular accessories.
The Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play support the use of Moto Mods via magnets and 16 pins that allow modular accessories to quickly connect to the phone, thus enhancing functionality without requiring a reboot of the device.
It's very likely that the new Moto Z2 will be offered with new Moto Mods, with one of the models even including the virtual assistant Alexa. While we're on the subject of modular accessories, let's remind you that Motorola announced the return of the RAZR as a Moto Mod.
Motorola indirectly confirmed that the successor to the Moto Z is coming in 2017 when it announced that it would be releasing new Moto Mods over the next three years. The company also revealed that the Moto Z versions would be available on other US carriers besides Verizon. The Moto Z Droid, Moto Z Force Droid, and Moto Z Play Droid are currently available exclusively on Verizon.
The Moto Z and Moto Z Force were released in September, while the Moto Z2 won't be announced until June this year at the earliest. Until then, Motorola is busy with the new Moto X (2017).
