Study: 96% of websites are attacked by malicious Bots

The Internet is full of bots, some of which you may not be too concerned about. In fact, malicious bots attack 96% of websites with login pages and are particularly active on user accounts. This puts companies at risk of data theft, account takeovers, and even fraud.

According to a new report from Distil Networks, a bot detection and mitigation company, almost every website with a login page is under attack by malicious bots. These automated programs are put to use by hackers and other cybercriminals and can be quite effective in their efforts.

The report finds that websites that require logins are almost certain to be attacked by malicious bots. With a 96% attack rate, it’s probably very important to warn you about these types of websites. These malicious bots are used by competitors, hackers, and are most often used for brute force attacks, competitive data mining, online scams, account hijacking, data theft, spam, digital ad fraud, and website downtime.

The internet is full of bots, which are both good and bad. In fact, their presence is so great that 40% of all web traffic in 2016 came from bots. Malicious bots were responsible for only half of that amount.

Data shows that 60% of malicious bots originate from data centers. Amazon is the top Internet Service Provider for the third year in a row with 16% of all bad bot traffic. That's about four times more than the next largest ISP.
