The Recording Industry Association of America, better known as the RIAA, has asked BitTorrent to help combat piracy of its members' copyrighted content, Billboard reports.
In a letter to BitTorrent CEO Eric Kilnker, RIAA executive vice president Brad Buckles accused the company of being “the source of the software primarily used for infringement.”
Brad Buckles reports that BitTorrent software “facilitated approximately 75 percent of the more than 1.6 million torrent-based infringements on RIAA member projects in the United States, according to a letter sent in 2014.”
The letter includes a list of hashes of files containing projects by RIAA members such as Michael Jackson and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
He added that the RIAA is “willing to cooperate in a process of sharing hashes with BitTorrent, Inc., on a regular basis, so that BitTorrent, Inc. can use the information to prevent further infringements.”
It should be mentioned that BitTorrent Inc is behind the popular uTorrent program.
