Today Google announced Brillo, a lightweight operating system that uses the Android core. Along with Brillo, the company also announced Weave, a service that will help all IoT devices communicate with each other.

Weave, for example, will be able to connect all the devices in a home, not just to your phone, but to each other. The Weave service will have APIs for developing cross-platform applications, so that connected devices speak the same language.

The new Brillo operating system will also be able to understand voice commands (such as “give me an ice cube” that you can say to a smart refrigerator).

Google also wants to use Brillo to improve the user experience of IoT devices. Brillo, along with the Weave service, looks like it will offer significant applications, considering they work together in a home.

“Any Android device that is connected to a device that uses Brillo or Weave will see the same things. You will be able to go to the Brillo platform through your mobile device, add owners for a device. It will be a control node that anyone can control, no matter what device they are using.”

Brillo will be available by the end of the year, while Weave will be released later.
